For my final project, I was thinking a lot about legacy and growth, and I ended up drawing inspiration from women in 1950s China — especially the way they sewed quilts or did embroidery for their children. I imagined myself in that role, sewing a quilt made up of all the art styles, experiences, and mindsets I’ve gone through as I’ve grown as an artist. But instead of literally drawing past works, I focused more on the mindset I had when I first started drawing — when things felt freer, there wasn’t a “right” or “wrong,” and I didn’t worry about messing up or erasing. I wanted that feeling to come through in the way I built the quilt.
In one corner of the piece, there’s a baby — a symbolic version of my future self. The quilt I’m working on is for her, like a gift I’m making now that she’ll grow up with. It’s kind of about hope — that my future self will carry all these things I’ve learned and keep building on them, keep creating.
